Shipmates,i have been asked to forward the following information:

Homecoming Parade for 1ACC RAF Kirton in Lindsey.

“Kirton in Lindsey Town Council,in conjunction with 1ACC,are planning to hold a homecoming parade on Wednesday 16th December 2009,to welcome RAF personnel home from Afghanistan and by way of thanks to those who have served their country.

We need help from as many people as possible to make the event a success. We would like all local residents, groups, businesses, dignataries, schools and such like to attend and give support. We are also looking for financial assistance to enable us to provide food, drink etc.

Plans are still in the very early stages, but at this stage we envisage that the RAF will parade from the camp to the Market place/Green area, hopefully with equipment used in Afghanistan in tow, following which there will be a celebratory reception on the Green. The parade and reception will take place in the afternoon, exact timings to be notified.

If you would like to attend, are able to offer finanical assistance or donate food, drink etc,we wold like to hear from you. Please also inform anyone you think would be interested in attending,as we hope to literally line the streets of Kirton in Lindsey to show our gratitude to our local servicemen and women.”

Shipmates if you would like to attend please contact the clerk at the council who is Cate Neal using her e-mail address:kirtonclerk@btinternet.com

If you contact her she will be able to let you know about the times etc.

The mayor, who is ex-Army has been in contact with me and has asked for as many ex-service people to attend and also for Standards. The Area Standard will be on parade as well as Lincoln branch and Scunthorpe branch. Please contact the council if you would like to attend and please let me know if you are going as well.

As already communiicated to you, Harry, the Lincoln Standard will be paraded along with the Standard of the Lincoln Branch of the Submariner's Association.

I guess we just have to wait now for the K-i-L organisers to get in touch with us regarding details and timings etc.

The final arrangements have been made for the Homecoming parade and those that have been in contact with the Kirton in Lindsey Town Council will have received a copy.

The Homecoming Parade will take place on Wednesday 16th December 2009 starting at 14.00 hrs in the Market Place.

Standard Bearers, veterans and ex-military personnel are requested to assemble at the Queen's Head Pub between 13.00hrs and 1330hrs,where the RAF marshalls will meet them.

On the day, the parade was attended by many ex-Service Association Standards including those from No9 Area, Spalding, Lincoln and Scunthorpe.  Also in attendance was the Standard from TS ARIADNE, Scunthorpe SCC.

The Standard Bearers were supposed to be organised by a Flt Sgt from 1ACC but he seemed more concerned about posing in his desert combats and getting this thermos mug refilled with coffee on a regular basis.  He actually reminded me of one of those Senior Rates from the old days who would muster the troops at Both Watches and then say to his Killick “If you need me during the day, you know where I am”!  And you'd not see him until Both Watches the following morning!

In the end, the task of organising the Standard Bearers appeared to fall to an old boy from the RBL who, I felt, took unnecessary flak from many of the assembled Bearers.  It wasn't really his fault as this alleged SNCO was the one who should've taken charge and disseminated information as and when required but, for most of the time, he was nowhere to be seen!

The day itself was extremely well attended by the public which, given the awful weather conditions – rain and wind, was very laudible (Note to self – invest in suitable wet weather clothing like what the Area Chairman has!!).  The 1ACC platoon marched past in their desert combats – whatever happened to No.1s? – before assembling in the market square to be presented with the Keys of the Town by the local Mayor.  The Standard Bearers weren't apparently invited to this part of the parade which I thought was a shame, so many repaired to the village green – now a village brown! – where a hog roast was being held for all the attendees.  As I had to get my car into Dr. Renault's surgery, I had to reluctantly forego this part of the celebrations although I did bid my fellow RNA shipmates farewell before taking my leave.

All in all, it was a decent turn-out but could've been so much more if those who were supposedly organising the venture had applied themselves more.  Let's face it, our troops deserve at least that much!

Bungy a big thankyou to you and the shipmates who attended the parade, the Area Chairman mentioned at the last Area meeting the problems with the RAF marshall. It looks like we all need to get the same 'foul weather' gear as Keith and Yvonne for future events in 'roughers'.Once again a big well done and thanks for attending.
